AP Royal Oak Chronograph Resale Value 2026: Real Payouts

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph payouts September 2026: 26240ST $28K-$38K, 26331ST $18K-$27K, 26240OR rose gold $52K-$70K. Real seller numbers, not asks.

If you own an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph and you're thinking about selling in 2026, the first thing to understand is that "Royal Oak Chronograph" covers two very different watches on the secondary market: the discontinued 26331 (2012-2022, ETA-derived movement) and the current 26240 (2022 to today, in-house caliber 4401). They trade in different price tiers and buyers treat them as different pieces.

Real seller numbers in September 2026: a clean steel 26240ST with the blue tapisserie dial pays $28,000 to $36,000 to a specialized buyer. The previous-gen 26331ST steel pays $18,000 to $25,000. Rose gold 26240OR sits at $52,000 to $70,000. Two-tone and panda variants have their own quirks.

Here is what actually moves the price, what each reference pays today, and the five mistakes that cost AP chronograph sellers thousands.

Why 26331 and 26240 trade so differently

The market splits these two on three points:

1. Movement. The 26331 runs the caliber 2385, which is based on the Frederic Piguet 1185. Reliable, well-known, but not in-house. The 26240 introduced the in-house caliber 4401 with flyback chronograph, 70-hour reserve and a display caseback. AP marketed the 4401 as the future of the line, and the market priced it that way from day one.

2. Case proportions and layout. AP reworked the dial on the 26240: the sub-dial layout shifted, date moved to 6 o'clock, and the case gained a display back. Some purists prefer the 26331 for the "classic" AP tri-compax layout at 3, 6 and 9. Others pay up for the 26240 for the new movement and display. That preference splits the market cleanly.

3. Availability. The 26331 is discontinued. Supply is fixed and shrinking. The 26240 is current production, waiting-list at AP boutiques, and the secondary market trades above retail on hot dial variants. Both dynamics create premiums, but they behave differently: 26331 firms up as clean examples get scarce, 26240 tracks boutique allocation and dial-color hype.

Current September 2026 market benchmarks

These are real seller payouts to a specialized buyer for full-set watches in good condition. Ranges reflect dial, condition, serial year and paperwork.

  • 26240ST Steel, blue dial (current gen): $28,000 - $36,000
  • 26240ST Steel, black dial: $27,000 - $34,000
  • 26240ST Steel, grey/smoked dial: $29,000 - $37,000
  • 26240ST Steel, salmon dial: $32,000 - $42,000
  • 26240ST Steel, "panda" white dial with black subs: $34,000 - $44,000
  • 26331ST Steel, blue dial (previous gen): $18,000 - $25,000
  • 26331ST Steel, black dial: $17,000 - $23,000
  • 26331ST Steel, panda dial: $20,000 - $27,000
  • 26331SR Two-tone (steel + rose gold), silver dial: $22,000 - $29,000
  • 26331OR Rose Gold, blue or grey dial: $45,000 - $60,000
  • 26240OR Rose Gold, blue dial (current gen): $52,000 - $70,000
  • 26240BC White Gold, blue dial: $58,000 - $75,000

These are what a specialized buyer pays you, not Chrono24 asks. Chrono24 listings on the same references typically sit 12% to 20% above real closing prices because they include seller optimism and dealer margin on inventory that has been sitting for months. Real transactions close lower.

The panda variants (white dial with black sub-dials) carry a premium on both generations because collectors chase them. The salmon 26240ST is the same story: dial hype adds real money.

The five things that set your Royal Oak Chronograph payout

1. Reference and dial combo. The blue-dial 26240ST is the volume seller. The salmon and panda dials are premium variants that pay $4,000 to $8,000 more. Two-tone 26331SR sits in its own bucket because the audience is smaller. Rose gold and white gold references are precious-metal territory where the metal alone is part of the price.

2. Serial year. AP uses letter serials. On the 26240 line, F-serial (2022) and G-serial (2023-2024) are the volume years. Newer serials with full transferable warranty pay slightly more. On the 26331, later serials before discontinuation (2020-2022 production) generally pay slightly better than earlier examples because of newer service intervals.

3. Case sharpness. The Royal Oak case has sharp beveled edges that a single amateur polish will destroy. On a $32,000 26240ST, a polished case takes 15% to 20% off market. That is $5,000 to $6,500 gone at the polishing wheel. Original finish matters more on AP than on most brands because the case geometry is the whole design.

4. Full set completeness. Box, warranty card, hangtag, service booklet, and any AP-authorized service receipts. Full set adds 6% to 10%. Missing warranty card alone drops 4% to 7%. No papers at all cuts 10% to 15% on steel, more on precious metal.

5. Service status. AP-authorized service on the 4401 or 2385 movement runs $1,400 to $2,200 and takes 3 to 6 months. A recent service with receipt adds credibility and 2% to 4%. An overdue service on a 6+ year-old 26331 subtracts because the buyer prices in the future service cost.

5 mistakes AP Royal Oak Chronograph sellers make

Mistake 1: Polishing the case before selling. The single most expensive move on any Royal Oak. Amateur polishing flattens the beveled edges that define the Genta case and it cannot be undone. On a 26240ST that is $5,000 to $7,000 gone. On a rose gold 26240OR it can be $10,000 or more. Send photos of the watch as it is. Do not "clean it up" first.

Mistake 2: Assuming Chrono24 asks are real transaction prices. A 26240ST listed at $42,000 does not mean anyone paid $42,000. Listings sit for weeks or months. Real closes run 12% to 20% below asks. We break down this dynamic in our Rolex resale chart 2026 piece and the same pattern applies across all high-end references, AP included.

Mistake 3: Selling to a local pawn shop or general jeweler. A pawn shop needs 30% to 50% margin because they cannot move a $30,000 AP chronograph in their local walk-in traffic. A specialized buyer with a national resale network works on much thinner spreads because we have a real exit for the piece. On a 26240ST that difference is $8,000 to $12,000 in your pocket. Same logic covered in our sell privately vs dealer breakdown.

Mistake 4: Missing the full-set premium. If you still have the AP box, warranty card, hangtag, and any service papers, gather everything before you send photos. On a 26331ST, the warranty card alone can be worth $2,000 to $3,500. On a rose gold 26240OR the paperwork premium can be $4,000+. Check drawers, safes, deposit boxes before you conclude the papers are gone.

Mistake 5: Selling the precious metal or panda variant to a generalist buyer. The 26240OR, 26240BC, salmon and panda dial variants trade in a thinner market with fewer qualified buyers. A generalist watch dealer will lowball because they do not know their own exit. A specialized AP buyer prices these off the actual thin market where they move. The gap on a rose gold chronograph can be $12,000+.

Self-check before you contact us

Before you send photos, gather these on your Royal Oak Chronograph:

  1. Full reference. 26240ST.OO.1320ST.01 or 26331ST.OO.1220ST.02 or the OR/BC/SR equivalent. On the caseback and card.
  2. Serial letter. Between the lugs or on the warranty card. Tells us the production year.
  3. Photos. Straight-on dial, case side profile (for polish check), caseback, and the movement through the display back on 26240.
  4. Box, papers, service receipts. Every document that came with the watch. Booklets and hangtags too.
  5. Honest condition notes. Bracelet stretch, dial marks, bezel wear, chronograph function status, last service date.

With those five items we can quote you a firm number in under two hours during US business hours.

Bottom line

The AP Royal Oak Chronograph is a solid seller's watch in 2026. The 26240 trades at or above retail on hot dials because AP boutique waiting lists never cleared. The 26331 is discontinued and clean examples firm up as the pool shrinks. Precious metal variants sit in a thin but well-funded market.

Your job as a seller is straightforward: do not polish it, do not accept the first lowball, gather all the paperwork you have, and get two or three real offers from specialized buyers before you decide.
